Sansour’s most personal film to date, Familiar Phantoms draws on the artist’s family history in Russia and Palestine to give an intimate insight into how personal identity is shaped by geo-political events and how the experiences of our ancestors imprint themselves on our lives. The film weaves together private archives, Super 8 footage, photography, and re-enacted family recollections, with key scenes set in an abandoned mansion that serves as the seat of memory.
