A Catholic neighbourhood in the heart of Belfast, New Lodge, is today marked by social abandonment, and remains one of the neighbourhoods most violently affected by the conflict in Northern Ireland. Although occasionally unhinged, inhabitants still have a proud sense of belonging and an idealism that can be found in the humanity of their interactions and in their caustic humour. More than 20 years after the ceasefire, The Flats examines what has become of the residents of this high-rise microcosm, forever marked by the trauma and bloodshed of The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
